If I trade a vehicle with 18,000 left for a hybrid, will I come out even with the incentives and tax breaks?

My problem is this: I have a 2002 Ford F150 I paid WAY too much for, and now I’m not using it at all. It has 18,000 left on the loan. Would the incentives and tax breaks offered for hybrid owners be able to help me pay whats left on the loan if I trade it in for a hybrid?

Right now you are “upside down” on that car loan– You owe more than what the car is worth. You didn’t mention what particular trim your F150 is, but even a top-of-the-line Harley Davison edition of the ’02 F150 with 50K miles on the odometer is worth only $15,000 according to Kelley Blue Books.

If your truck is only worth $15,000, you are still going to be stuck with $3,000 in loans after you got rid of the truck– and that’s assuming you can actually find a buyer who will pay you the KBB value, considering that there is a glut of used trucks out there right now.

Your best bet is to hang onto that truck until you owe less than what it’s worth, then sell it and get a more fuel-efficient vehicle.
