How to drive plastic wheels by steel shaft for a robot?
Pls tell me the way in which I can mount plastic wheels like those used in a strolley, or vaccum cleaner wheels etc. to a steel shaft for a robot.. (Note: time constraint, so drilling holes into shafts is out of option)
Its actually a DIY project. payload of 5kgs and entire weight of the robot is appox 20 kgs.
Is this for a product that will be mass produced, or a one off DIY project? and is the time constraint only at assembly time, of does it include the manufacture of the parts (which might be done on automated equipment)?
If the former, you might consider a “D” shaped shaft and a mold a matching hole on the wheel hub, an other option would be a straight knurl on the shaft and a press fit into the wheel hub, or if the restriction on drilling applies only at assembly, you (or a subcontractor) could drill the shaft and install a pin (perpendicular to the shaft) that fits a slot in the wheel hub.
If this is a DIY project where you are trying to drive a wheel that was originally intended to spin freely on an axle, it may be difficult to transmit a lot of torque, you could try the straight knurl and press fit, but if the knurling is not done on a mass production basis with automatic equipment, I don’t think it will be any faster than drilling and pinning at assembly.
