How much does a full set of equipment cost for the beginner in hockey?

I am just embarking on playing ice hockey for the first time. I am planning on playing a position other than goalie and was wondering how much a full set of equipment would cost. It looks like I would need to get a helmet, shoulder pads, shin guards, elbow pads, girdle, gloves, pants, jersey, and stick at a minimum (I already own skates). Is it better for the money to start with used equipment or can I find a set of all new equipment for under 300 dollars?

Like anything else it all depends on the brands and/or line of equipment you get. I’ve seen sticks from $30 all the way up to $200 +, gloves from $25 up to $80 and this was when I was looking with my 6 yr. old who plays. If you want to get a rough idea, go to hockeymonkey.com or hockeygiant.com and you can see some prices. You can find used equipment on ebay and maybe some shops where you live (where I am we have a place called Play-It-Again Sports who re-sale equipment). We bought my son a slightly used pair of $200 skates (retail) for $30. You would probably want to go try some stuff on before you buy it over the net though to get your correct size. I think you may have a tough time getting everything new for under $300. Good luck and enjoy playing.
