Can a police officer detect the speed of another driver while the officer himself is driving?

Also, are there any ground rules for a police officer to approach a speeding driver? Or can he treat the driver as rude as he wishes? If there are indeed “Etiquette” and he does not follow them, can the driver contest?

I like the first answer (because as to radar, it’s correct), but I have to disagree with the second part of their answer.

There are ground rules, and they are very likely in writing in one form or another in every law enforcement agency in the US. Officers are not expected to be less than professional to the public. If this is a concern for you, you are always free to contact that officer or his/her supervisor and explain your concerns.
